Maria Middelares opens state-of-the-art logistics center at De Prijkels
Maria Middelares has officially opened the doors of its new logistics center in the De Prijkels industrial zone. With this strategic move, the hospital group centralizes all logistics and non-patient-related activities on a single, future-oriented site — marking an important milestone in the further optimization of its healthcare operations.
Creating space for care
By centralizing logistics, Maria Middelares is freeing up valuable space at its hospital sites in Ghent, Deinze, Aalter, and Gentbrugge. This allows square meters to be fully dedicated once again to patients and clinical activities. At the same time, the new centralized operation brings greater clarity, efficiency, and peace of mind behind the scenes.
One integrated logistics ecosystem
The logistics center combines both pharmacy distribution and the central warehouse into one integrated flow. An overarching warehouse management system (WMS) controls all operations, ensuring seamless coordination across all logistics activities.
The new site is equipped with advanced automation, including:
- an automated tote storage system with 6,000 bins (expandable to 12,000) and 11 robots
- pharmacy robots with expansion capabilities
- smart storage solutions with pallet racking, shelving, and a mezzanine
This combination of automation and well-designed manual storage ensures efficient picking processes and optimal use of available space.

The logistics platform has been designed with growth and flexibility in mind. It not only supports the current needs of the hospital group but also allows for future expansion and collaboration with external partners.
